How often should I get my eyes tested?
The current recommendation is to have an eye examination (another name for the 'sight test') every two years, and to attend earlier if any eye problems occur. The sight test in the Republic of Ireland includes both a test of vision and an eye health check. In some other countries only the test of vision is provided as standard.

Why do I need to get my eyes tested?
Vision screenings that are performed by a school nurse or your employer are not the same as comprehensive eye exams. Optometrists/Opticians check for eye and other diseases that have no early symptoms, but should nevertheless be treated as early as possible to avoid vision loss.

I have two children when should they have their first eye test?
There are tests that can be used on infants and preschool children who cannot read. If you have any concerns about your child's vision you should have them tested immediately. If you have no concerns around the age of three and half years is a good age for a first sight test. If a child's vision seems good it should still be tested when they reach school age, as any problems are better addressed before a child learns to read.

What is glaucoma?
Glaucoma is a group of diseases of the optic nerve involving loss of retinal ganglion cells in a characteristic pattern of optic neuropathy. Raised intraocular pressure is a significant risk factor for developing glaucoma (above 22mmHg). One person may develop nerve damage at a relatively low pressure, while another person may have high eye pressure for years and yet never develop damage. Untreated glaucoma leads to permanent damage of the optic nerve and resultant visual field loss, which can progress to blindness. Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness throughout the world.
